English Teacher Training

Background

CCCEA has been dedicated to the post-earthquake reconstruction since the “5.12 Sichuan Earthquake”. In October 2008, CCCEA initiated the “Post-earthquake Reconstruction Research Tour” with 23 local secondary school principals and teachers. We organized a fundraising event “We’ll Never Forget” to arouse students, teachers, and the public’s awareness on the post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan.

Besides technical support, CCCEA believes in the importance of training talented English teachers. In view of this, we have founded and initiated the “Sichuan English Teacher Professional Development Program” in collaboration with York Region District School Board since 2009. With our support, over 1,800 local English teachers have attended this program in Sichuan and in Hong Kong. We aim to nurture English teachers in disaster affected areas with Canadian teaching methodologies, in order to assist their long-term development on English education.

Co-organizer

York Region District School Board
York Region District School Board (YRDSB) is the third largest government-funded school board under Ontario Ministry of Education. YRDSB is consistently chosen to be a top ranking school board in the Ontario Province. Every year, teacher mentors are screened to participate in the English Teacher Professional Development Program. The selected mentors are ESL professionals, who possess more than 10-year experience in teaching non-native English learners. They also train new teachers in Canada.

Program Aims

  • Sharing western teaching methodologies with the teachers from China
  • Empowering teachers’ skills in communicating with students: learning to arouse students’ interests and potentials through different forms of teaching
  • Promoting student-based teaching methods through sharing and role playing
