What is an

open work permit?

An open work permit is a work permit that is not job-specific. Because it is not job-specific, you will not need the following when you apply for your work permit:

  • a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada, or

  • proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee

The current open work permit includes:

  •  Off-Campus Work

  •  Post-Graduation Work Permit

  •  Spouse/ Common-law Partner Open Work Permit

  •  CO-OP

As a Hong Kong recent graduate, you may be eligible to apply for an open work permit under a temporary public policy for Hong Kong residents. This public policy will allow for the issuance of open work permits to eligible residents of Hong Kong, whether you are in Canada or abroad, for a period of up to three years. Eligible family members may also be issued an open work permit.

  • Have graduated no more than 5 years before you apply  for this open work permit;

  • a degree from a designated post-secondary learning institution in Canada or abroad, or

  • a diploma for a minimum 2-year program from a designated post-secondary learning institution in Canada or abroad
